{"id":542,"date":"2014-07-11T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-07-11T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gac.idexlab.com\/blog\/open-innovation-roi\/"},"modified":"2025-04-08T09:33:43","modified_gmt":"2025-04-08T09:33:43","slug":"open-innovation-roi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gac.idexlab.com\/?p=542","title":{"rendered":"When Open Innovation breaks computing limits and ROI"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Open Innovation ROI in medical Science<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Xerox Realbusiness blog published a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realbusiness.com\/2014\/07\/how-harvard-medical-school-uses-open-innovation-to-solve-world-class-scientific-problems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stunning article<\/a> yesterday on the Open Innovation ROI in medical science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They relate how the Harvard Medical School (HMS) used Open Innovation and a developpers&#8217; contest to dramatically improve gene sequencing performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The MegaBLAST algorithm from the&nbsp;National Center of Biotechnology Informatics allows to measure the differences between two genes, it had previously processed 100,000 sequences in 15,622 seconds (260.4 hours).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HMS needed to improve this by orders of magnitude to conduct its own research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They initially apponted a person during one year ($120k) devoted to this topic and could lower&nbsp;the processinf time to 2,845 seconds or &nbsp;x5.5 better. A great but unsufficient improvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, they organized an open contest with a $6000 prize. 122 solutions were proposed, the winner could reduce the computing time to <strong>16 seconds,<\/strong> or <strong>1000x faster<\/strong> than the MegaBLAST algorithm!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This gives an exemple of the open innovation ROI :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>internal development = \u00a0120 000 USD for a x5.5 improvement = x0.00005\/USD<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>open innovation = 6 000 USD for x1000 = x0.17\/USD or <strong>3000 times more efficient.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is an extreme case of course but inspiring for anyone with similar challenges, isn&#8217;t it
